DETROIT, Michigan, October 9, 2008...Contemporary dance leader Hubbard Street Dance Chicago makes its Detroit Opera House debut in the company’s first performance engagement in Detroit in over 10 years. Opening the 2008-09 Chrysler Foundation Dance Series with performances demonstrating innovative athleticism and ability, Hubbard Street presents a limited three-performance engagement, October 31 through November 2, 2008 at the Detroit Opera House.

The mixed-repertory program includes works entirely new to Detroit audiences, including Fold (Oct. 31) by acclaimed choreographer Toru Shimazaki, a brand new work making its tour debut. Hubbard Street’s own Alejandro Cerrudo, a member of HSDC’s main company, also premieres his new work entitled Off Screen (Nov. 1& 2) for Detroit audiences. Other works performed include audience favorite Minus 16 by Israeli choreographer Ohad Naharin (performed at all shows) and choreographer Doug Varone’s intricate and visually powerful piece, The Constant Shift of Pulse (Nov. 1).

As a special offering, dance enthusiasts and students will have the opportunity to get up-close-and-personal with Hubbard Street dancers in master classes with the company on Saturday, November 1 at 11 a.m. at the Margo V. Cohen Center for Dance at the Detroit Opera House. Patrons who purchase a ticket for HSDC have the opportunity to attend the Master Class for free by presenting a ticket or ticket stub at the door. If you do not have a ticket or ticket stub, the admission fee for the Master Class is $25. Pre-register by contacting Carol Halsted at dance@motopera.org or 313.237.3416.

As an additional opportunity for audience participation and feedback, patrons are invited to stay after the show for a “talk back” session in the Cadillac Café. Facilitated by Detroit Opera House Director of Dance Carol Halsted, audience members will be able to discuss the performance with other dance lovers and ask questions of dance company members. For more information on the “Talk Back” sessions after the show, please contact Carol Halsted, at (313) 237-3426.
